MORE EFFECTIVE THAN A BOYCOTT?

MORE EFFECTIVE THAN A BOYCOTT?

What could possibly be more effective than a cultural boycott against Israel? Irish folksinger Tommy Sands gave us the answer to that question this week.... the man known as Ireland's Pete Seeger came to Israel to perform last week.... but he didn't. Instead he performed at the weekly demonstration in support of the residents of Sheikh Jarrah....

Irish folk legend Tommy Sands joins the Sheikh Jarrah Protest

Irish folk legend Tommy Sands performed in front of a crowd of hundreds of Israelis and Palestinians who came to the Sheikh Jarrah neighbourhood in East Jerusalem for the weekly Friday demonstration to protest against house evictions of Palestinians by Israeli courts and settlers.

After the performance, the demonstrators marched in the streets of the neighbourhood. Israeli police tried to prevent them from marching, but was unable to stop them due to the large numbers of demonstrators.

He came with a message as well as his song....

"I decided to come to Israel, the Middle East, Palestine, Gaza, to learn. I also wanted to come because after the flotilla in particular, Israeli people were being dehumanized in Ireland. People were saying don't go there - peace activists are attacked. But I realize there are many peace activists here who were doing wonderful work and who maybe might need the solidarity of some other people from outside."- Tommy Sands, Mount Scopus Radio
